Dean's Council

The Dean’s Council celebrates the generous donors who uplift our mission to prepare healers and transform health with annual giving of $2,500 or more to benefit Indiana University School of Medicine. For over 40 years, these donors have been our friends and partners, fueling innovative medical research and opening doors of opportunity for medical students across the state.

Our Dean’s Council donors — over 600 households strong and representing 41 U.S. states and 3 countries — are a deeply meaningful component of our IU School of Medicine community. They support various areas of the school that are meaningful to them as individuals, but together, the generosity of the Dean’s Council is making better health a reality for patients in Indiana and across the globe. We are honored to recognize the friendship and commitment of these donors through special events, updates, and engagement opportunities and by sharing the impact of their generosity on medical research and education.

Giving Makes So Much Possible

For more than a century, IU School of Medicine has provided exceptional medical training for students who care for people across Indiana and around the world. While the school is a public asset, only a fraction of our budget comes from the state. Our donors make so much more possible. Dean’s Council members made a significant impact in 2025 by supporting 334 unique funds across 37 units of the School.

Taking Impact Further

The Dean’s Council Board of Directors Priority Fund

The Dean’s Council Board of Directors Priority Fund was established in 2020 by the Dean’s Council Board of Directors. This is a special initiative of the volunteer board to support innovative projects and priority needs across the School of Medicine. Much like a “giving circle,” board members and others who make gifts of $500 or more to this account qualify to vote for initiatives in alignment with Dean Hess’s top priorities to further the mission of the School of Medicine. Since its first award in 2021, this fund has disbursed $140,000 to impactful projects and initiatives at the school.

The 2025 award celebrates Dean Jay L. Hess’s tenure with IU in an extra special way – by raising funds for a highly impactful full-tuition scholarship to be awarded to an incoming first-year medical student in academic year 2026-2027. Full-tuition awards are exceptionally rare, and the Board of Directors views this initiative as a powerful showcase of the impact donors can have when coming together to honor a leader who has championed the transformative value of scholarships throughout his tenure.
