Kelley School of Business Partnership Programs

As academic health centers continue to grow into larger, more complex systems, their leaders must be able to confront and execute a more comprehensive array of business decisions than ever before.

In response to this demand for high levels of business acumen, Indiana University School of Medicine partners with IU Kelley School of Business to provide leadership development programs specifically designed for academic medicine professionals. These programs optimize a combination of extensive clinical, research and education expertise and insight into business and leadership as they relate to faculty in academic medicine.

Eligibility

These programs are open to any IU School of Medicine faculty member interested in leading and improving business skills.

Details

  • Courses are taught on the IU Indianapolis campus and online through the IU Kelley School of Business, the only top-ranked school to create an MBA specifically designed for physicians and scientists.
  • The curriculum for all programs is as rigorous as any Kelley School of Business coursework and focuses on solving health care challenges.
    • Traditional business topics — such as finance, accounting, economics and operations — are viewed through medicine, so each lesson is directly applicable to faculty. Physicians and scientists will find comfort in studying the business of medicine alongside colleagues who speak the same language and face the same challenges.

Successful Outcomes

Faculty who complete these programs gain an understanding of the other side of health care — the one beyond the exam room, laboratory or grand rounds. Faculty acquire new knowledge and skills in a positive and highly relevant learning environment.

Networking and Leadership Opportunities

Alumni of these programs say that peer learning and expanding their network of colleagues are among the significant takeaways from these courses. To earn a leadership position or create a broader impact in a faculty role, clinicians and scientists must understand how to work cohesively with others, manage their strengths and weaknesses, and properly align themselves for the positions they seek.

In addition, these programs provide unique insight into how physicians and scientists can leverage skills in management, leadership, negotiations and process improvement to earn a seat at the table when health care business decisions are made.

CME and Program Funding

Fund enrollment in these positions through:

  • The IU tuition benefit program
  • Continuing medical education (CME) or professional development funds
  • School or department funding

CME credits are awarded for every hour you spend in class sessions. CME credits are administered through the Division of Continuing Education for Healthcare Professionals.
