Message from the Chief Residents

Thank you for your interest in the Indiana University School of Medicine Anesthesiology Residency program! We are thrilled that you want to learn more about our program and all that the great city of Indianapolis has to offer. Our program was first accredited by the ACGME in 1973 when Robert K. Stoelting, MD, was chair. We pride ourselves on our rich history of training and producing excellent clinical anesthesia consultants that choose to go on to practice in both academic and private practice groups across the United States.

If you are looking for a wide breadth and depth of clinical opportunities that will prepare you for anything that wheels through those OR doors, IU School of Medicine can be your home. As Indiana’s primary academic institution, our residents rotate through Eskenazi Hospital, IU Health University Hospital, IU Health Methodist Hospital, Riley Children’s Hospital and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Hospital, each offering unique and complex cases in general, regional, pediatric, cardiac, transplant, vascular, neuro, trauma and OB anesthesia. Additionally, residents participate in journal club, comprehensive didactics and scholarly activities, such as department wide morbidity and mortality conferences and presentations at both national and regional conferences with paid attendance, travel and lodging covered by our department. Additional advantages to the program include free parking, funds for on-call meals, textbook allowance, free TrueLearn subscriptions and full coverage of the BASIC exam registration fee.

As an anesthesia resident at IU School of Medicine, you have plenty of time to enjoy the Indianapolis area. We have many professional sports teams to cheer on including the Fever, Pacers and Colts. The city offers many family-friendly activities like the Indianapolis Zoo, the world’s largest Children’s Museum and the 27.1-mile long Monon Trail. We also can’t forget about the Indianapolis 500 which provides many days of concerts and festivities around Memorial Day.

Our graduates have pursued fellowship training, as well as academic and private practice jobs with much success.

We hope you are as excited about our program as we are and look forward to meeting you soon!
