Education Programs

The Department of Anesthesia provides training for medical students, residents and fellows in the Graduate Medical Education program, and graduate students pursuing a Master’s of Science in Anesthesia in the Anesthesiologist Assistant program.

Diverse Clinical Experience

The Indiana University School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus provides a uniquely robust clinical environment for learners in anesthesia, who complete rotations at five tertiary-care hospitals including IU Health University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, Roudebush VA Medical Center and Riley Hospital for Children. This rich learning environment prepares learners for a wide range of practice by offering broad diversity of illness, unique systems of care and patients of all socioeconomic groups.

Medical Student Training

The Anesthesia Clerkship for third-year medical students is a core rotation intended to expose students to the basics of peri-operative management. Multiple electives in anesthesiology are available to fourth-year students.

Four-year categorical residency positions and three-year advanced residencies are available. With 85 anesthesiology residents, IU School of Medicine has one of the largest anesthesiology residency programs in the United States.
