Education Programs

The Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Anesthesia provides training for medical students, residents and fellows in the Graduate Medical Education program, and graduate students pursuing a Master’s of Science in Anesthesia in the Anesthesiologist Assistant program.

Students and trainees collaborate closely with the department’s accomplished faculty physicians, gaining the clinical expertise and academic foundation necessary to advance in their training and careers. Medical Student Training

The Anesthesia Clerkship for third-year medical students is a core rotation intended to expose students to the basics of peri-operative management. Multiple electives in anesthesiology are available to fourth-year students.

Residency

Four-year categorical residency positions and three-year advanced residencies are available. With 85 anesthesiology residents, IU School of Medicine has one of the largest anesthesiology residency programs in the United States.

Anesthesiologist Assistant Program

Embedded in the Department of Anesthesia, IU School of Medicine offers a Master of Science in Anesthesia degree. The program is an intensive 28-month didactic and clinical curriculum that prepares learners for certification as Anesthesiologist Assistants.

Diverse Clinical Experience

The Indiana University School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus provides a uniquely robust clinical environment for learners in anesthesia, who complete rotations at five tertiary-care hospitals including IU Health University Hospital, IU Health Methodist Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, Roudebush VA Medical Center and Riley Hospital for Children. This rich learning environment prepares learners for a wide range of practice by offering broad diversity of illness, unique systems of care and patients of all socioeconomic groups.
