Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship

The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at IU School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited one-year post-residency program that provides comprehensive training in all aspects of pediatric anesthesiology. Fellows train at Riley Hospital for Children, which is Indiana’s only hospital devoted exclusively to providing comprehensive care to children. Graduates can expect to leave the program fully prepared in the conduct of anesthesia for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing the full spectrum of surgical subspecialty procedures including cardiac, major neurologic and transplantation surgery.

Operating Facilities

The main operating room area at Riley Hospital consists of a three-pod pre/post anesthesia area; 16 large, modern operating rooms with modern technology; two Interventional Radiology suites; and two Cardiac Cath Lab suites. The Riley Outpatient Center includes a six-room Operating Suite with an associated Day Surgery and PACU area. This facility is physically connected to the main hospital. Additional anesthetics, including MRI, CT, Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and ERCP, are administered in remote locations within the hospital. Riley Hospital is a full trauma center, provides pediatric transplantation, and continues to have the highest patient acuity level in the United States. More than 20,000 anesthetics are performed at Riley each year.

Didactic Schedule

A didactic teaching program dedicated to fellowship training is an integral part of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship, and fellows play an active role. Weekly lectures presented by members of the anesthesiology faculty cover all areas of pediatric anesthesiology—from basic pediatric physiology to the management of specific congenital cardiac lesions, designed to prepare fellows for the Pediatric Anesthesia board exam. Fellows also attend the Pediatric Anesthesia Division Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality Sessions, and Division Grand Rounds as part of the fellowship core curriculum. Training leading to PALS certification is provided to all fellows as are mock oral board sessions.

Work Schedule and Benefits

Pediatric anesthesiology fellows have clinical responsibilities on weekdays in addition to a call schedule. Call is taken from home. When on call, fellows participate in cases that occur “after hours” or on weekends. Fellows are free from clinical responsibilities the day following call. Salary and benefits, including health insurance, vacation and meeting days, are commensurate with the PGY-5 resident level at IU School of Medicine with an additional stipend for the mandatory research component. Find details about employment terms and benefits through the Office of Graduate Medical Education.
