Indiana Genomics Research Training Program for Data Scientists (INGEN4DS) is committed to ensuring diversity in selecting outstanding scholars to participate in the program. Students from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, first-generation college students, individuals with disabilities, and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications are due October 31st for the January program start date, or March 31st for the June program start date.

Eligibility

Applicants to INGEN4DS must meet the following requirements:

  • Have United States citizenship or be a permanent resident.
  • Have a strong desire and commitment to join the genomics workforce or a PhD program in the genomics field.
  • Be enrolled and in good standing at one of IU's data science-related master’s degree programs.

  • Students enrolled in a bioinformatics program are not eligible for this genomics training program.

How to apply

*The application deadline is October 31st for the January start date.

To be considered for the program, you must complete the online application, submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and supply unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate institution and your master’s degree program (if applicable).

Application

Your application to INGEN4DS must be submitted online via REDCap. Once logged in to the application, take the following steps:

  • Make sure to complete the Name and Contact Information section before clicking Save & Return Later at the bottom of the screen.
  • If you save the application to return later, you will receive an email from REDCap containing a link to return to your application. You will need to enter the same email address you supplied in your contact information to log back into your application.
  • Transcripts and optional CV/resumes should be uploaded into the online application. 

Letters of Recommendation

You will need to provide the name and email address of a faculty reference in the application. Only one reference letter is required but you may request up to two letters of reference. Please ask your reference(s) to email a signed pdf of their recommendation letter to INGEN4DS@iu.edu

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate degree institution and your master’s program (if available) should be uploaded in the transcript section of the online application.

After Acceptance

Once accepted into INGEN4DS, you will:

  • Participate in the January or June orientation
  • (Optional) Complete up to three laboratory rotations, spending three weeks in each lab.
  • Complete required training in laboratory safety and responsible conduct of research.
  • Develop individualized academic and professional development plans in consultation with INGEN4DS faculty and staff.
