Milestones 2021–2024

The Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center achieved many milestones between 2021-2024. Here are some of the highlights.

August 2021

Rohan Dharmakumar, PhD, becomes executive director of the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center.

February 2022

Ischemic heart disease illustrates hemorrhage and heart damage in the heart.
Intramyocardial hemorrhage drives 2-fold expansion of MI size post revascularization.

This illustration illustrates the iron overload and fat and iron buildup that occurs in hemorrhagic MI.

Study led by Rohan Dharmakumar, PhD, identifies that iron drives the formation of fatty tissue and leads to chronic heart failure in nearly half of heart attack survivors.

August 2022

Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering PhD students begin doctoral training at the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center in advanced cardiovascular imaging, instrumentation and therapeutics.

December 2022

Keyur Vora, MD, MS, George Revtyak, MD, and Rohan Dharmakumar, PhD with the first patient to enroll in a new cardiovascular clinical trial.

First patient enrolls in clinical trial that aims to determine whether removing residual iron within damaged heart can lead to better outcomes.

January 2023

Ankit Desai, MD and Loren Field, PhD, both contributed to genetic breakthroughs to advance cardiovascular research.

Ankit A. Desai, MD, contributes to the understanding that a SOX17 gene deficiency mediates pulmonary arterial hypertension, and Loren J. Field, PhD, helps identify a gene which facilitates cell cycle re-entry, the first step in regeneration, in infarcted hearts.

May 2023

The Krannert Biennial 2023 Welcome Poster shows a male figure running with a heart illuminated and an illuminated heart behind him in the background.

World-renowned cardiovascular researchers arrive in Indianapolis for the inaugural Krannert Biennial, hosted by the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center, to discuss the latest research and challenges in treating ischemic heart disease.

The center expands its clinical research program with the recruitment of a new clinical research leader and additional research coordinators.

October 2023

The Canadian Cardiovascular Society classification of acute myocardial infarction (CCS-AMI)

With the center's input, the world's first clinical classification of heart attacks based on tissue damage is adopted by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.
