Faculty experts within the Indiana Consultations for Healthcare providers in Addiction, Mental Health, and Perinatal Psychiatry Program (CHAMP) have compiled a lit of tools and resources from our partners around the country, including the Indiana  FSSA Division of Mental Health and Addictions, the University of Washington, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and more.

Opioid ECHO 

IU hosts a bi-monthly ECHO on best practices for treating pregnant and postpartum individuals and infants impacted by Opioid Use Disorder.

Medication Resources

The National Institutes of Health's LactMed® database contains information on drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. It includes information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant. Suggested therapeutic alternatives to those drugs are provided, where appropriate. All data are derived from the scientific literature and fully referenced. A peer review panel reviews the data to assure scientific validity and currency.

International Resources

Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) has a variety treatment guidelines and other resources for clinicians, patients and the public to improve clinical care.

MotherToBaby, a service of the non-profit Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS), is the nation’s leading authority and most trusted source of evidence-based information on the benefit or risk of medications and other exposures during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. We specialize in answering questions about the benefit/risk of exposures, such as medications, vaccines, chemicals, herbal products, substances of abuse, maternal health conditions and much more, during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our no-cost information service is available to people who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding, their family members, health professionals, and the general public via chat, text, phone, and email in both English and Spanish.

MotherToBaby is a suggested resource by many agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Women’s Health. More than 100,000 people and their health providers seek information about birth defects prevention from OTIS and MotherToBaby every year.

Postpartum Support International (PSI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote awareness, prevention and treatment of mental health issues related to childbearing in every country worldwide.

1.800.944.4PPD (4773): PSI’s toll-free Patient HelpLine serves over 1,000 callers a month and is staffed by a volunteer team of PSI trained responders who rapidly refer callers to appropriate local resources, including emergency services. The Patient HelpLine also offers Spanish-language support – press 1 for Spanish.

PSI Perinatal Psychiatric Consult Line: The consultation line is available for medical professionals who have questions about the mental health care related to pregnant and postpartum patients and pre-conception planning. The Perinatal Psychiatric Consult Line is staffed by reproductive psychiatrists who are members of PSI and specialists in the treatment of perinatal mental health disorders. Assessment and Management of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) Antidepressant Treatment Algorithm provides a step-by-step guide to prescribing antidepressants, with specific first and second line treatment recommendations and guidelines for ongoing assessment and treatment. 

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) Assessment of Depression Severity and Treatment Options highlights the signs and symptoms of depression and options for treatment as they relate to clinical assessment and/or EPDS score.

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) Bipolar Disorder Screen was derived from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Based Bipolar Disorder Screening Scale to be used prior to starting treatment with an antidepressant.

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) Screening Algorithm for Obstetric Providers provides guidance for obstetric providers and clinical support staff on administering the EPDS and next steps depending on the EPDS score. The first side is a simplified version of the algorithm. Side two provides more detailed information including talking points and suggested language re: how to discuss the EPDS and resultant scores with the patients.

The EPDS is a widely used and validated 10-item questionnaire to identify women experiencing depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The EPDS is also available in Spanish, and in a variety of other languages including, but not limited to, Arabic, Portuguese, and Farsi.

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) highlights key information/concepts to consider when assessing the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women.

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) provides talking points re: antidepressant use, the risks of antidepressants use vs. risks of under no treatment of depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Mom's Depression (MCPAP) Summary of Emotional Complications During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period provides an overview of the range of emotional complications that can occur during pregnancy and postpartum including Baby Blues, Perinatal Depression, Perinatal Anxiety, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Postpartum Psychosis.

Screening and Brief Intervention for Substance Use in Pregnancy (SUD1)
A screening algorithm for detecting substance use in pregnancy and pathways of intervention stratified by risk.

Assessment of Substance Use in Pregnancy (SUD2)
Provides information for how to assess concerning behaviors and interpret urine drug tests.

Treatment Options for Perinatal Substance Use Disorders (SUD3)
Provides guidance about substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings and how to facilitate referral to treatment and Plan of Safe Care (POSC).

Choosing a Medication for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (SUD4)
Highlights the pros and cons of the most commonly used medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnancy.

Management of Pain During and After Delivery (SUD5)
Provides guidance for the management of acute pain and ongoing use of pain medications in pregnant and postpartum women taking medications for opioid use disorder (OUD).

Opioid Overdose Prevention (SUD6)
Offers key information about safe opioid prescribing, risk factors for overdose and how to counsel patients and families about use of Naloxone (Narcan).

Summary of Impact and Management of Substance Use during the Perinatal Period (SUD7/8)
Includes detailed information about risk of acute use, management of intoxication and withdrawal, as well as, guidance for ongoing treatment for the most commonly used substances during and after pregnancy.
