Emily Dock’s calm and compassionate leadership, her empathy, and her commitment to creating a positive, trustworthy and inclusive environment for her colleagues, her patients and their families are just a few of her many stand-out attributes, her friends and admirers say.

Dock, a Clinical Manager for Advanced Practice Providers, is the recipient of the IU Health Physicians President’s Values Award in the “professional” category. She will be recognized later in September at a lunch for award winners, and she is now among those to be considered for the IU Health-wide President’s Leadership Award presented later this year.

Dock has been a nurse practitioner in the Department of Medicine’s palliative care group since 2015. She has worked for IU Health since 2006, first as an RN and then as a nurse practitioner, beginning in 2012. She recently transitioned to a manager role from after being a team lead for three years.

Dock’s commitment to patient care is clear:

Earlier this year, she finished her Doctorate of Nurse Practice from the University of Indianapolis. During that program, she led a quality improvement project in the MICU at IU Health University Hospital, trialing a patient screening process during daily huddles to promote early goals of care conversations, she said.

“My project demonstrated a significant increase in early goals of care conversations for patients newly admitted to that unit.”

A Q&A with Emily Dock, NP

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Helping patients and families during a difficult time. I know that I cannot always change the outcome, but I can help ease the suffering of patients who have significant illness.

I work among wonderful professionals that support me in the work that I want to accomplish with my patients. Our social workers and chaplains are very resourceful, and I am surrounded by other providers (APPs and physicians) who are always available to collaborate on difficult patient situations. I have also identified mentors along the way at IU who have helped contribute to my success.

How do you like to spend your time when you're not at work?

When I am not at work, I am spending time with my 4 and 5 year old daughters, my husband, and our Frenchie, Moxifloxacin. A couple times a week, I can be found at one of the local Orange Theories running off some stress. In the summer we like to take road trips to visit family and spend the rest of our time at the pool with friends. We recently had the pleasure of going on a Disney Cruise to Alaska to celebrate my parent's 50th wedding anniversary with extended family.
