The Infectious Diseases Society of America's Medical Education Community of Practice has recognized Cole Beeler, MD, as a Featured Educator.
Beeler is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He is currently associate director for the Infectious Disease Fellowship and a key clinical educator in the Division of Infectious Diseases. He also serves as the medical director of infection prevention at IU Health University Hospital.
ISDA is a community of over 13,000 physicians, scientists and public health experts who specialize in infectious diseases, according to its website. Its mission is to "improve the health of individuals, communities and society by promoting excellence in patient care, education, research, public health, and prevention relating to infectious diseases."
On its website, the society regularly highlights physician-educators who display groundbreaking work in the medical education field. Beeler is one of two physicians showcased for Spring 2025.
"Through the Featured Educator webpage, we hope to highlight innovative education practices among our members, encourage collaboration among educators, and inspire those pursuing medical education careers," the IDSA says. "By doing so, we can exchange novel ideas and best practices, implement successful concepts in our own institutions, and establish partnerships to work together across institutions."
Beeler completed his college, medical school, residency and fellowship training at Indiana University.
A passionate educator, Beeler has been recognized twice by the the Indiana University Board of Trustees with a Trustee Teaching Award. He was also give the university's Distinguished Service Medal in 2022; and he was included on the Indianapolis Business Journal's Forty Under 40 list the same year.
Beeler is the second IU School of Medicine faculty member in a year to be showcased by IDSA.
In May 2024, Saira Butt, MD, was recognized by the society as a Featured Educator. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She joined IU School of Medicine in 2016 and has served as the Program Director of the Adult Infectious Diseases fellowship program since 2018.
