Each year, the Department of Medicine’s Division of Endocrinology recognizes fellows and faculty members with awards for their exemplary work at Indiana University School of Medicine.
The 2025 award for Teacher of the Year was given to James Walsh, MD, PhD. This honor is voted on by the division’s fellows and presented to an endocrinology faculty member who shows outstanding dedication to medical education.
Walsh joined the IU School of Medicine faculty in 1995. He is the endocrinology section chief at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and participates in basic science and clinical research studies.
Walsh earned the Teacher of the Year award two years in a row; he also received the honor in 2024, alongside co-recipients Melissa Cavaghan, MD, and Zeb Saeed, MBBS.
Ajay Makwana, MD, who completed the endocrinology fellowship program in June, was given the 2025 Richard B. Schnute Award. Since its creation in 2002, this award is presented to one fellow in recognition of outstanding compassion, professionalism and clinical care. The recipient is chosen by a vote of the division faculty, and the award is presented in memory of Schnute, a late professor emeritus of the division.
