The Global Experience in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences study abroad course offers students in the medical imaging health professions programs at the Indiana University School of Medicine a unique opportunity to advance their professional education through international engagement. Since its launch in 2019, the course has combined structured coursework with global experiential learning, allowing students to explore and compare imaging practices across a variety of healthcare systems and clinical settings.

In March, two assistant professors of clinical radiologic and imaging sciences, Emily Scaggs, MSEd and Megan Bybee, MSEd, led a cohort of 12 students to London for an in-depth exploration of the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) and culture. Throughout the trip, students visited iconic London landmarks, toured renowned medical museums, and traveled to Lincoln, England, where they engaged with faculty, students and staff at the University of Lincoln and Lincoln County Hospital. These experiences provided valuable insight into radiography and imaging practices within the NHS, while encouraging thoughtful comparisons with U.S. education and clinical care.

A highlight of this year’s program was the opportunity to explore the University of Lincoln’s advanced virtual reality software, currently being used in student positioning labs. The students observed and tested the immersive simulation technology, sparking meaningful discussion about the role of VR in enhancing radiography education and improving clinical readiness.

Beyond academics, students experienced the rich culture, history, and atmosphere of the U.K. — building lasting memories, forming professional connections and gaining a broader global perspective. The R277 Global Experience course is a transformative learning experience and a great opportunity for students in IU School of Medicine Radiologic and Imaging Sciences programs to grow professionally and personally.
