Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD, MHSA, dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and IU’s executive vice president of university clinical affairs, was honored last month with the Henry R. Besch, Jr. Promotion of Excellence Award, recognizing his transformative leadership and extraordinary contributions to the university community.

The award, presented by the Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors at IU, recognizes individuals who demonstrate “distinction in promoting and encouraging the growth of excellence at Indiana University,” alongside “extraordinary professional and personal commitments to outstanding teaching, scholarship and creativity.”

During his decade as dean, Hess has led the IU School of Medicine through remarkable growth and innovation. Under his tenure, NIH funding more than doubled, rising from $97 million to over $250 million, while total research funding now exceeds $500 million annually. He oversaw the recruitment of 26 department chairs and numerous institute directors, expanded the medical school class size by 30% and increased residency positions statewide by 25%. His leadership also brought the launch of the Precision Health Initiative, comprehensive status from the National Cancer Institute for the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, and more than $1.7 billion raised through the bicentennial campaign.

“It has been a privilege and the high point of my career to serve this institution and to work alongside so many talented, dedicated and inspiring people. I am proud of what we’ve accomplished and deeply grateful for the community who made that possible,” Hess said, emphasizing that the honor reflects the collective effort of the IU community.

Hess’ leadership has left a lasting imprint on IU, strengthening research, expanding educational opportunities and fostering collaboration across campuses. Earlier this year, he announced plans to step down as dean in July 2026.

The Henry R. Besch, Jr. Promotion of Excellence Award is among the university’s highest honors, celebrating those who embody service, leadership and dedication to advancing IU’s mission.
