Growing evidence shows that a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can become a chronic health condition with effects that can persist, evolve over a time or emerge later in life. Experts recognize that chronic TBI requires lifelong care and ongoing management to help maintain their health, independence and quality of life.
Effective chronic TBI management involves improving healthcare systems, training medical professionals and support staff, and equipping people with TBI, their families and communities with the tools and support needed for long-term success.
The BeHEALTHY project
This groundbreaking project, led by Indiana University, partners with the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems centers and experts in collaborative care, self-management, policy and consumer advocacy to develop a comprehensive chronic disease management model for TBI. “BeHEALTHY” addresses critical knowledge gaps and explore areas where more research is needed to better support people with chronic TBI, their caregivers and healthcare professionals.
