Participation in medical service learning programs supplement and enhance medical education with real-world community engagement. All IU School of Medicine students have an opportunity to participate in a broad range of medical service learning experiences, including curricular and co-curricular programs. As part of the school’s mission, educators and mentors emphasize a public responsibility for medical students to serve as advocates for the health and well-being of the community.
Many of the service opportunities at the Northwest campus are based in Gary and Hammond, two underserved cities in Lake County. Medical students regularly volunteer with Faith Farms, a local organization focused on addressing food insecurity and promoting access to fresh produce to community members. Students also volunteer with Sojourner Truth House and Brother’s Keeper Homeless Shelter to help provide resources to individuals struggling with homelessness, unemployment and other social needs. Saint Joseph Soup Kitchen is another organization that medical students engage with to provide fresh meals to those in need.
