Bio

Jeffrey Kim, MPH-VPH, DVM, DACLAM, is an Assistant Professor and Senior Clinical Veterinarian at Indiana University School of Medicine. A board-certified laboratory animal veterinarian, Dr. Kim's work integrates comparative medicine, veterinary clinical care, research collaboration, animal welfare, and research program development to support rigorous and reproducible biomedical science.

Dr. Kim earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Public Health in Veterinary Public Health from Ohio State University and completed a residency in comparative medicine and postdoctoral research training at Colorado State University. Before joining Indiana University, he served as a clinical veterinarian and faculty member at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and as Chief Veterinarian for the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory. His responsibilities included clinical medicine, researcher training, and germ-free, gnotobiotic, and biocontainment research programs. His previous experience includes veterinary roles at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other academic and biomedical research institutions.

Dr. Kim's scholarly interests center on comparative medicine and the environment-human-animal interface. His research uses comparative approaches to investigate disease and therapeutic interventions while advancing laboratory animal care and welfare. His work has encompassed infectious disease, environmental and cardiometabolic health, and laboratory animal medicine, with an emphasis on strengthening animal models and improving the quality and reproducibility of biomedical research.

Dr. Kim is particularly interested in multidisciplinary collaborations in which veterinary expertise can strengthen animal models, experimental design, clinical interpretation, and translational relevance. He also serves on the Indiana University Indianapolis Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and as an Ad Hoc Specialist for AAALAC International, contributing his expertise to the evaluation of animal care and use programs against internationally recognized standards of quality and excellence.

Research Interests and Expertise

Dr. Kim's research focuses on advancing comparative medicine to improve animal health and welfare while strengthening the rigor and translational relevance of biomedical research. His work examines how disease, therapeutic interventions, and environmental exposures influence animal health, animal models, and experimental outcomes.

His scholarship spans two complementary areas, the use of comparative animal models to investigate mechanisms relevant to human and animal disease, and the refinement of laboratory animal care to improve welfare and experimental reproducibility. His research has included infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance, comparative models of immunodeficiency, environmental and cardiometabolic disease, and pain management. Across these areas, Dr. Kim applies veterinary and comparative medicine expertise to develop and refine animal models, address clinically relevant problems, and improve the quality and reproducibility of biomedical research.

Service Interests and Expertise

Dr. Kim's clinical and professional interests include laboratory animal medicine, animal model development and refinement, infectious disease, analgesia, and advancement of the 3Rs. His experience includes conventional, immunocompromised, germ-free and gnotobiotic animals, as well as biocontainment and infectious-disease research.

In addition to his service on the IU Indianapolis IACUC and as an Ad Hoc Specialist for AAALAC International, Dr. Kim contributes to the laboratory animal medicine profession through the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners. He serves on the ASLAP Board of Directors, has participated in national workforce initiatives for the laboratory animal veterinary profession, and serves as a peer reviewer for biomedical and veterinary journals.
