Bio
Harsh P. Shah, MD, MPI, is an assistant professor of neurological surgery. He joined the Indiana University School of Medicine in September 2026 after completing neurosurgical training and fellowships in functional neurosurgery and advanced neurosurgical oncology. Shah’s clinical practice focuses on stereotactic, functional, epilepsy and oncological neurosurgery. His research focuses on understanding the brain as a dynamic network and using electrophysiology, advanced neuroimaging and computational modeling to improve neurosurgical treatment. His work integrates intracranial electrophysiology, functional and structural imaging, and quantitative measures of cognition to better understand how surgery and neuromodulation alter brain networks.
Shah’s long-term goal is to develop personalized approaches that predict how an individual patient’s brain will respond to resection, ablation or electrical stimulation and use those predictions to improve seizure control, tumor treatment and preservation of cognitive function. He also has a strong interest in employing brain-computer interfaces and restorative neurotechnology to improve quality of life for his patients.
Shah grew up in India and the Chicagoland area. He earned his undergraduate degree in biomedical physics from Northwestern University and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed neurosurgical residency and fellowship training in stereotactic, functional, and epilepsy neurosurgery at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by an advanced neurosurgical oncology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He also holds a master’s degree in product innovation, reflecting his interest in translating clinical problems into new technologies and approaches to patient care.
Outside of work, Shah enjoys exploring Indiana with his fiancé, traveling, rock climbing, running and finding the best venues to enjoy live music.
