Bio
Scott D. Boden, MD, assumed his role as the 11th dean of Indiana University School of Medicine and executive vice president for university clinical affairs at Indiana University in September of 2026.
An orthopaedic surgeon-scientist and longtime leader in academic medicine, Boden joined IU after more than three decades at Emory University, where he held leadership roles spanning clinical care, research, innovation, strategy and academic-industry partnerships. Most recently, he served as chief partnership and innovation officer for Emory Healthcare and the Woodruff Health Sciences Center as a tenured professor and chair emeritus of orthopaedic surgery at Emory University School of Medicine.
During his career at Emory, Boden founded and directed the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center and served as the first chief medical officer and chief quality officer of Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital. He later served as chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and as the first chief strategy officer for Emory Healthcare and the Woodruff Health Sciences Center. In these roles, he helped expand Emory’s musculoskeletal clinical enterprise and led strategic partnerships focused on clinical growth, innovation and academic-industry collaboration.
As a physician-scientist, Boden’s research has focused on bone and cartilage regeneration and the development of new approaches to improve musculoskeletal care. His work has contributed to advances in bone growth and spine fusion technologies, and he has led translational research spanning basic discovery, clinical investigation and commercialization.
Boden earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center and a spine surgery fellowship at Case Western Reserve University Hospital before joining the Emory faculty in 1992.
