Bio

Valerie Joers, PhD, is an associate tesearch professor of neurology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Joers’ research program investigates the role of cannabinoid signaling to regulate peripheral and central immune cell crosstalk that may contribute to brain pathologies in age-related neurodegenerative disorders.

Prior to joining IU, Dr. Joers was an assistant professor at the University of Florida in the Tansey lab. She was involved in various education programs through the Department of Neuroscience to support undergraduate research. And in the laboratory, using a mechanistic approach, her group found that inhibiting CB2 decreases the amount of misfolded proteins in the brain. These exciting results suggest that cannabinoid receptor signaling may be targeted to treat the dysregulated immune system in proteinopathies, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
