Bio

Bryan M. Saltzman, MD, is a board-certified sports medicine provider specializing in adolescent and adult complex sports medicine, as well as knee, shoulder and elbow surgery.

He was recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine in 2024 to bring his nationally-recognized research efforts and adolescent/young adult athlete care to IU Health. 

Dr. Saltzman is the Chief of Sports Medicine & Shoulder/Elbow Surgery for IU Health Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Saltzman has particular interest in:

  • Knee ligament (ACL) reconstruction
  • Cartilage restoration
  • Meniscus repair/transplantation
  • Shoulder instability/labral repair
  • Rotator cuff repair 
  • Throwing shoulder/elbow pathology including “Tommy John” reconstruction
  • Kneecap (patellar) instability/dislocation repair

With his well-regarded research prowess (named an Avant Garde Health “Top 1% Orthopedic Researcher” in the U.S.) and over 170 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Saltzman has a passion for treating athletes and non-athletes alike of all types and ages, from the budding youth athlete up through the weekend warrior, with a desire to get individuals back to doing the things that make them most happy. He continues to have a number of ongoing research efforts including significant grant funding in ACL/knee ligament surgery, and is a participant in multiple multicenter research trials alongside other knee ligament specialist surgeons across the world.

Dr. Saltzman received his MD from Rush Medical College with AOA Honors and remained in Chicago at the esteemed Rush University for his orthopedic surgery residency. He completed his Sports Medicine and Shoulder/Elbow Fellowship at the prestigious OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, where he provided Orthopaedic team coverage for such professional teams as the AAA Minor League Baseball Charlotte Knights and the NFL Carolina Panthers. He was recruited to stay at OrthoCarolina, where he began his practice caring for patients in Charlotte and around the Southeastern U.S. He was the director of sports medicine research, served as the head team physician for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 49ers Men’s Division I athletics (American Athletic Conference), and for the Stumptown Athletic (NISA league professional soccer team). He was perennially named to North Carolina’s and Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” lists. He currently assists in the care of our local IU Indianapolis Jaguars athletes and IndyCar team members.
