Bio

Dr. Samala moved to the United States after graduating from Osmania Medical College in India. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, followed by a hepatology research fellowship in the Liver Diseases Section at the National Institutes of Health.

Since graduating from the Gastroenterology fellowship at Indiana University, Dr. Samala has been an integral member of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She is a clinical researcher with interests in metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD), particularly in women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) and postmenopausal women, the impact of sarcopenia in MASLD, and acute viral hepatitis.

As director of the MASLD Clinic, Dr. Samala leads a program that bridges specialized clinical care for patients referred to Indiana University with the clinical research opportunities offered by the Division. In her role as Associate Program Director for Research and Advocacy, she mentors fellows in developing research interests and serves as a conduit for feedback to enhance the quality of the fellowship training experience.
