Bio
Dr. Umphress completed medical school at Indiana University, where he was awarded the Carleton D. Nordshow Award and the ICPI Pathology National Honor Society Award for Outstanding Student in Pathology. He continued his medical training with a combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency at Northwestern McGaw Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. During residency, he received the Outstanding First-Year Resident Award in Autopsy and was named the 2019 Anatomic Pathology Resident of the Year.
Following residency, Dr. Umphress completed an oncologic surgical pathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he received specialized training in cancer diagnostics. He completed his training with a dermatopathology fellowship at Indiana University, where he is now a faculty surgical pathologist and dermatopathologist.
Dr. Umphress serves as Associate Program Director of the Pathology Residency and the Dermatopathology Fellowship. He received the 2023 Indiana University Anatomic Pathology Faculty Educator of the Year Award and was a recipient of the 2026 IU Board of Trustees Teaching Award. He is deeply committed to patient care, medical education, and dermatopathology research.
