Melanie A. Schreiner, MD
Assistant Professor of Family Medicine Practice
Program Director, Family Medicine Residency at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital
Bio
While I may have called Florida home for a large part of my childhood, I’m a Midwesterner at heart with ties to both Kansas and Indiana growing up. I decided early in my fourth year at Indiana University School of Medicine that I would stay in Indiana for residency training after I spent a month with the residents and directors at IU Health Ball Memorial Family Medicine Residency. I was impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of the directors as well as the high quality of residents and overall camaraderie that was shared and I knew that I was home!
During my residency, I was active in community education and women’s health issues and served as chief resident in my third year. After graduation, I spent two years in private practice before being asked to return to the residency as an Associate Program Director. I have loved my role as APD for 18 years and am now extremely excited to be stepping into the Program Director position. I hope to lead with grace, humor and a sense of purpose and I look forward to continuing Ball's long history of excellence in Family Medicine teaching. I am loyal to this program and proud of the hundreds of Ball graduates practicing across the country. I love being part of such a committed, fun and inspiring group of colleagues and residents — It makes it easy to come to work every day!
My professional interests include women’s health care including obstetrics, gynecology procedures (colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, IUD/Nexplanon) and menopausal management, office and clinic efficiency, as well as preventative care and quality metrics. I value leadership within our hospital and have served as Chair of the IUH Ball Medical Staff, Chair of IUH Ball Credentials Committee as well as long-time member of the Maternal Child Peer Review. I have a passion for serving the underserved and currently participate in the Muncie Mission Medical Board and work at the Muncie Mission Free Medical Clinic every 2-4 weeks.
Personally, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Kelly, and my teenage daughter, Nora. My best days are spent on our boat with our two Bernedoodles, Piper and Charlie, or sipping coffee and reading a good book with my cat, Daphne, on my lap. I love travel especially when I get to be active and try something new or enjoy a new food.
