Bio
Dr. Makoto Kataoka was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan—one of the most beautiful cities in the world—where he also earned his medical degree. With dual training in both Japan and the United States, he brings a unique and diverse clinical background. He has been practicing as a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at Indiana University since 2017.
With over two decades of clinical experience, Dr. Kataoka believes that true clinical success is built on hard work, consistently delivering high-quality care, and earning the trust of patients and colleagues alike. He is deeply committed to medical education in the field of cardiac anesthesiology, with a particular focus on advancing perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) expertise.
Dr. Kataoka leads a CME-accredited lecture series known as the “TEE Conference,” held every other month. This multidisciplinary educational event covers a range of topics, presents clinical challenges and discussion points, and includes relevant literature reviews. The conference is open to colleagues across specialties, including critical care, cardiology, and affiliated suburban hospitals. In addition, he organizes a quarterly Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conference within the cardiac anesthesiology division to promote ongoing quality improvement.
