Bio
Dr. Powell is a Professor of Urology at the Indiana University School of Medicine, dual-boarded in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS) as well as General Urology. His areas of specialty include urethroplasty in males and females, fistula repair, robotic surgery for complex pelvic prolapse, neurogenic bladder and urinary diversion, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, geriatric urology, and neuromodulation. His research interests integrate his training in electrical engineering to include development of wireless implantable devices for measuring bladder pressure, diabetes and its effects on the bladder, robotic sacral colpopexy using autologous fascia lata, and female urethra reconstruction. His work on diabetic bladder dysfunction has received funding by the NIH/NIDDK. He has served on the AUA Practice Guidelines Committee, contributed as an author for the AUA/SUFU/AUGS/PCORI Guideline on Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause, and has authored the Geriatric Urology chapter in Campbell’s Urology. He has also served as an editor for Current Bladder Dysfunction Reports. He has and is conducting clinical trials as a Principal Investigator for neuromodulation devices affecting the sacral nerve roots as well as posterior tibial nerve. Service to the profession includes board positions with the North Central Section of the American Urologic Association, Society for Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, & Urogenital Reconstruction and the Indiana Urological Society. He has spoken around the country and internationally on his research. He has been active in training residents not only in Indiana but also in Kenya and Gabon, with an interest in missionary medicine as well as global health taking residents from Indiana to Africa as well as training African residents in Africa through the Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS).
