Message from Mary
In the hustle and bustle of this holiday season, there is a natural tension between the greeting card messages expressing joy, light and laughter and the range of emotions that we may actually feel at this time of year.
Feelings of depletion, frustration, loneliness, loss or sadness are part of the holiday experience for all of us at one time or another. It can be hard to feel connected to others or live up to the expectations of the holidays.
As with all social conventions, the holidays serve a social and emotional purpose -- a time to hit the pause button on deadlines and work, to take a breath and gain perspective. They are also an invitation to refill our cup with awareness of the moments that resonate most deeply with our values. These may not be the idealized moments that we see depicted in the media. Instead, these are the micro-moments or subtle instances of connecting with others – a patient, a stranger, a loved one or a member of your community.
When we feel connection (with the gaze of our eyes, the sound of our voice, kind intentions), we are actively nurturing our central nervous system at the same time we are giving care and compassion to others. In these micro-moments, we are the best version of ourselves. Our ability to feel compassion, gratitude and a sense of common humanity are at their peak.
In this holiday season, I invite you to notice the micro moments in your life. Notice how they feel to you and the response of others. Savor these moments by bringing them back to memory whenever you can. Wishing you rest, peace and many micro-moments this holiday season!
