IU Cytotechnology Class of 2025 receives acknowledgements and awards

The Indiana University School of Medicine Cytotechnology Program was well represented at the American Society for Cytotechnology (ASCT) Annual Conference held May 2-4 in Reno, Nevada.

Five of seven students were able to attend along with both of the program's faculty members. Education Coordinator Josh Howell (Class of 2008) began his one-year term as president of the organization. Many alumni were in attendance including immediate past ASCT President Margee Muciarelli (Class of 1991).

Faculty member Amin Mustafa, MD was a featured speaker and presented two well-received and entertaining lectures. Mustafa is an assistant professor of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine and serves as the co-director for IU Health Immunohistochemistry Lab and is the Surgical Pathology Fellowship director.

Warren R. Lang Student Interesting Case Presentations

Two IU students were selected to for this year's Warren R. Lang Student Interesting Case Presentations. The awards were established in memory of Warren R. Lang, who was a relentless advocate for cytologists, cytology students and pathology residents. He enjoyed teaching immensely. Each year, up to 10 students compete for the awards. IU student Michael Vujnovich earned first place.

Geradline Colby Zeiler Award 

Immediate Past President of the Cytology Society of Indiana (CSI) and 2019 IU alum Madison Rector presented Michael Vujnovich with the CSI award. Vujnovich was also one of five national recipients of the Geraldine Colby Zeiler Award.

The scholarships are made possible through the generosity of William B. Zeiler, MD, family and friends of the late Mrs. Zeiler. Awards are based on academic performance and microscopic diagnostic skills as demonstrated within the program, as well as leadership ability, initiative, acceptance of responsibility, dedication and collegiality. The awards are funded through the College of American Pathologists Foundation and administered by the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC).

Liang-Che Tao Outstanding Student of the Year

Megan Kersey was presented with the Liang-Che Tao Outstanding Student of the Year Award. She is pictured with Cytotechnology Program Director Barbara McGahey Frain and Education Coordinator Josh Howell.
