In February, the Wellness Coalition challenged the IUSM student body across the state to walk or run 40 miles during the month. The challenge's goal was to inspire students to keep up with their physical wellness during a difficult time of year.
Last year, 103 students from 8 campuses walked 5,558 miles. This year, the students of IUSM showed up in an even bigger way. A total of 170 students from all 9 campuses moved a total of 9,300 miles! That’s about the distance of 164,600 football fields, about one-third of the Earth’s circumference at the equator, or 2,844,480,000 pizza slices lined up end to end.
The campus with the highest percentage of 40-mile finishers was Muncie, where nearly half of the entire campus (49%) moved at least 40 miles during the month. Together, they walked and ran a total of 1,774 miles. They have earned themselves a well-deserved campus prize! Congratulations, Muncie - way to get moving in February!
Students across the state should be incredibly proud of themselves for taking time to work on their physical wellness. The other 8 campuses were busy putting in work, too!
- Fort Wayne, last year’s campus winner, saw 28 participants move 1,111 miles together.
- Terre Haute’s 22 walkers moved 1,368 miles.
- Indianapolis moved 1,812 miles together.
- South Bend moved 1,244 miles.
- Bloomington, Evansville, Northwest, and West Lafayette walked and ran 1,987 miles altogether.
- One student even moved an impressive 304 miles on their own.
- Staying active can be tricky when the lectures and Anki cards are piling up, but making time to take care of yourself is incredibly important.
We hope this challenge inspired you to incorporate more physical activity into your busy schedules, even if it’s just walking a few extra miles a day.
Way to get moving, IUSM! Can you keep it up through the end of the year?
