With your Phase 2 clerkship scheduled being released on Thursday (March 13), Amanda Benaderet, MD, the assistant dean of curriculum and Phase 2 director, answers questions about what to expect.

MS2s: Answering questions about Phase 2 clerkship scheduling

Class of 2027: The moment you’ve been waiting for is almost here! Congratulations on finishing Phase 1 and preparing to step into clinical clerkships.

We have worked closely with our statewide clerkship teams to create schedules incorporating your preferences and offering dynamic clinical training experiences across Indiana.  We have compiled a list with important questions and answers to help you navigate Phase 2 scheduling.

Where/when do I access my clerkship schedule?

Your Phase 2 clerkship schedules will be released on Thursday, March 13. You will hear from the registrar on that day with instructions on accessing your schedules in E*Value.

Where will my rotations be?

Most will occur at your chosen home campus for Phase 2 clerkships. You may also rotate at other campuses to gain exposure to different clinical environments and patient populations.

Indianapolis students: If your schedule indicates an eight-week clerkship at a regional campus, you may in some instances only spend four weeks there and the remaining four weeks in Indianapolis. The statewide and/or regional campus coordinators will notify you of those specifics by early April. IU School of Medicine will provide housing during any assigned clerkships away from your home campus—within the Phase 2 scheduling guidelines.

How does Family Medicine placement work?

For Family Medicine, all students work one-on-one with a preceptor in communities statewide. Your schedule location may indicate a campus or simply state “Family Medicine Statewide Placement.” Family Medicine will send you a Family Medicine Clerkship Survey to indicate any areas in Indiana where you have access to free housing. They will do their best to accommodate you. Expect this email to come from the Family Medicine Clerkship. All students, regardless of location, must complete the survey. Your rotation's specific location will be determined following your completion of the survey.

What if I didn’t get my top choice for all rotations?

We understand that your schedule may not reflect your preferences for every rotation. However, we have connected you with strong clinical opportunities across the state and are confident you will succeed in your career goals with your Phase 2 schedule.

There's been a NEW major event impacting my ability to travel between campuses—What should I do?

If a NEW life event or unforeseen circumstance requires consideration of a schedule change, contact your lead advisor and submit a request before March 28 at 11:00 pm ET. The form will be accessible starting at noon ET on March 13. A committee reviews the requests. You'll be notified if any changes are granted. Please note: Our ability to make changes is extremely limited.

When do I get to sign up for an elective?

You can sign up for electives at the end of March once the Phase 3 class has completed its initial elective scheduling. The elective handbook lists all opportunities. Work with your lead advisor and the registrar to request an elective.

Where do I go to learn more about what to expect during Phase 2?

Both the Phase 2 webpages and the Class of 2027 Canvas Advising site have further information about the curriculum, transitioning to clinical years, FAQs, and more.

Congratulations again on this important step in your journey. We are excited to see you begin your clinical training!

Sincerely,

Amanda Benaderet, MD, Assistant Dean of Curriculum, Director of Phase 2
