Effective February 1, 2027, Cyrus A. Raji, MD, PhD, will join the Indiana University School of Medicine as division chief of neuroradiology and professor of radiology and imaging sciences.
Raji is a nationally recognized neuroradiologist and physician-scientist whose research uses advanced brain imaging to detect the earliest signs of Alzheimer's disease and to show how modifiable factors such as obesity, physical activity and traumatic brain injury shape brain health across the lifespan. He joins IU School of Medicine from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and its Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, where he is a tenured associate professor of radiology and neurology, director of neuromagnetic resonance imaging at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and leader of the Raji Brain Health Imaging Lab.
Raji has a sustained track record of National Institutes of Health funding, both as principal investigator on R01-funded projects and as imaging core director on multi-site NIH-funded research. He has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed articles, and his work has been cited more than 8,000 times.
"I am deeply honored to lead the division of neuroradiology at IU School of Medicine," Raji said. "The department has built one of the strongest environments in the country for brain imaging and Alzheimer's disease research. I look forward to growing a division that delivers exceptional care to patients across the state, trains the next generation of neuroradiologists and turns advanced imaging into earlier, more precise answers for people facing neurological disease."
As division chief, Raji will oversee the clinical, educational and research missions of the division of neuroradiology, including faculty recruitment, subspecialty clinical services across Indiana University Health and the department's ACGME-accredited neuroradiology fellowship. He will also build collaborations with the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and investigators across IU School of Medicine through his own laboratory.
"Raji brings a rare combination of clinical excellence, a nationally recognized research program and a clear vision for leadership," said Jason Allen, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and Eugene C. Klatte Professor of Radiology. "His work in neuroimaging and dementia prevention aligns directly with our strengths in neuroscience and Alzheimer's disease research, and we look forward to working with him to expand our neuroradiology program through clinical growth, education and extramural funding."
About Dr. Raji
Cyrus Raji, MD, PhD, earned his MD and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by a neuroradiology fellowship and an NIH-funded research year at the University of California, San Francisco. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology.
In 2018, he joined the faculty of the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he became associate professor of radiology and neurology with tenure. There, he directed neuromagnetic resonance imaging at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, served as associate director of the diagnostic radiology residency research track and as associate leader of the Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center Imaging Core. In 2025, he completed the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health executive leadership program for physicians in academic medical centers.
