Christian C. Strachan, MD, announced as 2020-21 Evans Fellow

Christian C. Strachan, MD, assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine, has been selected by Indiana University School of Medicine, IU Health and IU Health Physicians to be the recipient of the 2020-21 Evans Fellow in Health Care Leadership.

Named in honor of Daniel F. Evans Jr., JD, President Emeritus of IU Health, the Evans Fellowship program is designed to provide a mid/senior physician faculty member with executive education, personal leadership assessments and coaching, and structured networking and mentoring opportunities. This two-year leadership fellowship also includes structured coursework leading to a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the IU Kelley Business of Medicine program.

Strachan first came to IU School of Medicine in 1996 after attending medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Interested in pursuing specialties in both emergency medicine and pediatrics, Strachan found an opportunity at IU Health Methodist Hospital in an emergency medicine/pediatrics combined residency.

“This was one of only three combined residencies in this field at the time--with only six locations in the nation to train at. I did an “away rotation” at Methodist and fell in love with the combined residency and everything the city and system had to offer and have been here since,” said Strachan.

In sharing what he admires about IU School of Medicine, Strachan reflected, “I love the collegial atmosphere that is omnipresent at IU School of Medicine and IU Health, and the growth opportunities and faculty development that happen seemingly every day. The academic environment keeps me focused, constantly learning and excited to practice both clinically and administratively.”

Strachan’s official administrative career began in 2008 when he became the Associate Medical Director for the Methodist Emergency Department. Since this appointment, he has “been awe-inspired at how excellent leadership can help the school, health system and most importantly those with whom (he) works with.” Continually learning and growing in his administrative career, Strachan has entered into many leadership positions which have culminated in him now being the Executive Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs for Emergency Medicine.

Wanting to enhance and strengthen his administrative career even more, Strachan applied for the Evans Fellowship earlier this year. After learning about the Evans Fellowship, Strachan was excited at the possibility of getting an MBA while simultaneously gaining mentorship and leadership experience from IU Health and IU School of Medicine leaders.

“The MBA from the Kelley School of Business was the next logical step in advancing my knowledge about business administration and would give me the rest of the necessary backbone to reach future goals,” said Strachan. “I cannot think of a more important opportunity in my administrative career than the one that lays before me and I’m excited to begin this journey.”
