Bio

Chandy John, MD, MS, is Ryan White Professor of Pediatrics and a Distinguished Professor at Indiana University. He is Director of the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health at Indiana University and Riley Hospital for Children. Dr. John’s research studies are based in Uganda and Kenya, in collaboration with Makerere University, the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and Moi University.  Dr. John’s research has advanced scientific and medical understanding in four key areas: 1) defining pathways to neurodevelopmental impairment in severe malaria; 2) identifying key mechanisms that lead to severe disease and death in severe malaria; 3) determining how malaria transmission affects immunity; and 4) identifying interventions to reduce infection in children with sickle cell anemia. Dr. John’s research has resulted in more than 300 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. John’s work in global health education includes co-founding the global health track at the University of Minnesota, serving as program director of four global health training grants for trainees in Uganda, Kenya, and the US, and providing mentorship to more than 120 trainees at all levels, from undergraduate students to junior faculty. Many of his trainees are now leaders in global health, including two trainees who have held Dean positions. Dr. John has served on multiple national and international scientific committees and served as president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He has been elected to the Association of American Physicians and the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. John is also a writer who has published poetry, short stories, and essays.
