The Breast Imaging section at Indiana University is a strong proponent of research to help develop and improve methods to detect early stage breast cancer. Indiana Univeristy is part of The Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial, TMIST, which is a randomized breast cancer screening trial that will help researchers learn about the best ways to find breast cancer in asymptomatic women. IU is also part of the Abbreviated breast MRI trial which is looking at ways to improve detection of early, aggressive types of breast cancers.
Dr. Patterson is passionate about breast imaging and the importance of screening for the detection of early of breast cancer. She is interested in using risk assessment and breast density to personalize breast cancer screening for women. Under Dr. Patterson's guidance, Indiana University recently started a breast density screening program, using automated whole breast ultrasound as a supplemental screening tool for women with dense breast tissue. She also helped implement a risk assessment screening tool for all women who have screening mammography at an IU Health facility.
