Sherri Bucher has a passion for research and providing education by which to improve maternal-newborn-child health in resource-poor settings, as well as a long-standing interest in international public health. Dr. Bucher is an investigator with the Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Research, USAID-AMPATH, and Helping Babies Breathe (HBB). She is a certified international Master Trainer and Mentor for HBB on behalf of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Bucher has conducted research, training, and advocacy work in East Africa for initiatives related to neonatal resuscitation, safe drinking water, pMTCT, and maternal and newborn health. She is a member of the international working groups, and an Assistant Editor, for the AAP and WHO-supported simulation-based educational and training curricula, Essential Care for Every Baby and Special Care for the Small Baby. Dr. Bucher has lived abroad, including Kenya and Greece; currently, she works spends 2-3 months per year working in Africa.

Dr. Bucher is a co-investigator for Site 12 (Kenya) of the NIH-NICHD funded Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research, a multi-site consortium dedicated to the investigation and implementation of strategies to improve maternal-neonatal-child health in low/middle income countries. She served as the Principal Investigator on a variety of funded Helping Babies Survive (HBS) initiatives. Dr. Bucher is an international Master Trainer for HBS, and a HBS Country Mentor for Kenya on behalf of the American Academy of Pediatrics. On behalf of the IU-Kenya partnership, Dr. Bucher has performed a variety of other duties related to issues in global maternal-neonatal-child health including: (1) prevention of mother-to-child transmission (pMTCT) of HIV; (2) safe water, particularly within the context of pMTCT; (3) pediatric nutrition. Current areas of research focus and interest also include the development of “middle-tech” solutions, such as use of digital health tools to support implementation of Helping Babies Survive programs, and the design of an innovative, affordable biomedical device (NeoWarm) to support newborn thermoregulation and augment Kangaroo Mother Care. The mobile phone app that Dr. Bucher and her team developed to collect data regarding neonatal resuscitation training and implementation in resource-limited settings, mHBB, was featured as part of the Kenya Digital Health Dashboard in 2016 (http://www.healthenabled.org/index.php/healthe-africa/country-dashboards/kenya-digital-health-dashboard ). NeoWarm is in prototype phase. Dr. Bucher is particularly interested in how these solutions can be utilized in low- and middle-income countries to profoundly reduce morbidity and mortality from common underlying causes of newborn death, such as birth asphyxia and hypothermia.
