Bio

Dr. Raj Vuppalanchi is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Director of Hepatology at Indiana University School of Medicine. He joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2007 after completing fellowships in Clinical Pharmacology and Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Indiana University. An experienced hepatologist, he provides comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of liver disorders at the Digestive and Liver Disorders Clinic at Indiana University Hospital.

Dr. Vuppalanchi's research focuses on patient-centered approaches to advancing therapies for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), cholestatic and autoimmune liver diseases, including primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), as well as cirrhosis. He has made significant contributions to the development and application of non-invasive methods for assessing liver disease severity, including transient elastography for liver and spleen stiffness measurement.

In addition, his research has advanced understanding of the hepatic safety of pharmaceuticals, herbal products, and dietary supplements. Dr. Vuppalanchi serves as a principal investigator for numerous industry-sponsored and NIH-funded multicenter clinical trials, including studies conducted through the MASH Clinical Research Network (MASH CRN) and the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN). He also serves as principal investigator for the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) Phase I clinical trials program, with a particular focus on hepatic impairment studies.

Through his clinical, research, and leadership efforts, Dr. Vuppalanchi continues to advance the understanding and treatment of liver disease while expanding therapeutic options for patients.
