Bio

Dr. Carol Dellinger is the Program Director of the IU Family Medicine Residency Program at IU Health Primary Care Central in Indianapolis and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a born and bred Midwesterner, with her undergraduate degree from University of Illinois and MD from Southern Illinois University. She came to Indianapolis for her residency and after graduating from the IU Family Medicine Residency over 20 years ago, decided to stay in Indianapolis to practice, a decision she has never regretted. Her primary passion in medicine is Chronic Pain and Addiction. She started the Chronic Pain Opioid Use Disorder specialty track at the residency program in 2022 and continues to administer it. As an extension to the track, she started a buprenorphine clinic and acupuncture clinic at the residency to improve resident exposure and comfort in these topics. She is currently working toward board certification in Addiction Medicine. She was recognized by the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians for her work with opioids and education with the Indiana Family Physician of the Year award in 2023.

She worked in private practice at a Federally Qualified Health Center for 15 years, while working part time as a community preceptor with the residency program for part of her time there. She came to the residency full time in 2019. She has enjoyed being part of the residency program and being able to take part in many initiatives pursuing continuous improvement at the residency and leading the charge on more education related to opioid, addiction, and pain. Other interests in medicine include women’s health, mental health, resident education, and physician wellness, all of which she gets ample opportunity to explore in her current position.

When not giving compassionate care to patients or educating medical learners, Dr. Dellinger enjoys spending time with her two teenagers and her husband, cooking, reading, and socializing with friends.
