Bio

Dr. Paul Musey earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Georgia State University. After completing medical school at Emory University School of Medicine in 2009, he pursued Emergency Medicine residency training at Carolinas Medical Center, where he also served as faculty for two years before joining the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2014. Upon his arrival, he completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research and a research fellowship certified by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).
He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2021 and currently serves as the Eskenazi Health Foundation Chair and Scholar of Emergency Medicine, as well as Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Musey also holds the role of Medical Director for Enterprise Clinical Research Operations at IU Health, integrating research into clinical practice across the health system.

His academic focus centers on the evaluation and management of psychological contributors to emergency department presentations. Specifically, he has built a research program examining how underlying mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, affect the trajectory of emergency care, patient-centered outcomes, and healthcare resource utilization. Additional interests include addressing and eliminating health disparities in emergency care. Dr. Musey has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and he has served as principal investigator or site PI for numerous emergency department clinical studies and has received funding from the Emergency Medicine Foundation, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation, NIH, and most recently the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Nationally, Dr. Musey has over a decade of involvement with SAEM, most recently serving as Member-at-Large for the SAEM Foundation Board of Trustees (2023) and currently as Secretary/Treasurer (2025).

Outside of work, Paul and his wife Andrea are self-described foodies who enjoy exploring new culinary experiences. These days, they happily embrace their role as “uber drivers” for their two children, Micah and Olivia, shuttling them to various activities and events.
