Bio

Laurie L. Ackerman, MD is a clinical professor of neurological surgery and the John Kalsbeck Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She joined the IU School of Medicine as a faculty member in 2007 where she serves as the director of the Neurosurgical Craniofacial Clinic, liason for the trauma program and also served as the interim chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurological Surgery from 2020-2025. She cares for patients at Riley Children's Health.

Dr. Ackerman earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in neurological surgery at the University of Iowa. This was followed by a fellowship in pediatric neurological surgery at Riley Children's Health and the IU School of Medicine.

Dr. Ackerman treats a wide variety of pediatric neurosurgical conditions including hydrocephalus, developmental anomalies and Chiari. She has a special interest in trauma and craniosynostosis.

Dr. Ackerman has served on the guidelines committee for the AANS/CNS and has assisted in developing guidelines for treatment of Chiari Malformations. She participates in research including the Park-Reeves Consortium on treatment of Chiari Malformations topics in trauma and injury prevention. She has served in leadership positions in the Division of Pediatric Neurological Surgery and frequently lectures on pediatric neurosurgery topics.
