Bio
Melanie Pickett, OD, FAAO, serves as director of optometric services for the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology.
Pickett is a graduate of DePauw University. Following completion of her optometric education at IU School of Optometry, Pickett joined a private practice in northern Indiana. In 2004, wishing to return to academia, Pickett joined the Indiana University Health Springmill Clinic, a collaborative effort between the IU School of Optometry and IU Department of Ophthalmology, located in northern Indianapolis.
In 2009, Pickett became a full-time faculty member of the Department of Ophthalmology. Pickett has helped to establish several of the department’s outlying clinics and serves as mentor to the additional optometrists in the department. In addition, Pickett serves on the department’s leadership committee and is co-director of the continuing medical education committee.
Pickett's research interests are in the areas of glaucoma and dry eye clinical trials. She currently is involved in multiple clinical trials involving new and novel medications or delivery methods. She also enjoys working on specialty contact lens fits for patients with ocular or visual needs.
Pickett has presented at multiple national optometry meetings as well as internationally on ophthalmic research. She has co-authored multiple scientific publications. She enjoys all aspects of being a faculty member at IU School of Medicine including research, teaching and—her primary passion—caring for patients in her native Hoosier state.
