Matt Lewis was honored with Indiana AAP Award in legacy of Edwin L. Gresham

Neonatologist Honored by Indiana Chapter of the AAP

Matt Lewis Neonatologist

Matt Lewis, MD, FAAP, received the Edwin L. Gresham Award for advancing the care of newborn infants. After the death of Ed Gresham, the Father of Neonatology in Indiana, the Indiana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (INAAP) wanted to recognize those who make significant contributions in perinatal medicine. The award has been presented annually since the late 1980s, and Lewis received the award in July of this year.

Edwin L. Gresham, MD, was the chairman of the Indiana State Board of Health and a leading figure in pediatric medicine. He was a professor of pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine and director of the Newborn Special Care Center at Riley Hospital for Children. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and received the highest grade in the nation on the Perinatal Boards. Gresham was a constant contributor to pediatrics and left an amazing impact.

“I’m humbled and honored to receive it,” said Lewis. “I love my job.”

Lewis is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. After attending the University of Notre Dame on a naval ROTC scholarship, he served in the United States Navy for six years prior to going to medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He finished pediatric residency at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and his neonatology fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

“Dr. Lewis is an incredibly talented neonatologist,” said Dr. Jaime Stelzer, a pediatrics specialist and President of Indiana AAP. “His calm demeanor when consulting on a complex patient is appreciated.”

Stelzer nominated Lewis for the award and presented it to him. She admires his caring behavior towards patients and their families. Lewis works in the NICU at Community Hospital North. He has worked for Indiana University for 10 years and has loved every second of it.

“I love what I do,” said Lewis. “I love going to work, and the continuity of care is great.”
