AAMC president is Bogdewic Lectureship featured guest

An intimate conversation with David J. Skorton, MD, Monday, Oct. 14

He is the current president of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and was recently named one of Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives for 2024. He is also the former secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, where he oversaw 19 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo and numerous research centers and education programs; the former president of two universities (Cornell and the University of Iowa); and, perhaps surprisingly, the former Chairman of the New York Racing Association.

David J. Skorton, MD, has a depth of leadership experience that covers government, association, higher education and medicine, and he’s ready to share the challenges he’s experienced and the lessons he’s learned with the Indiana University School of Medicine community.

Skorton is the 2024 guest of honor for the Stephen P. Bogdewic Lectureship in Medical Leadership event, happening Monday, Oct. 14.

The annual event, now in its third year, was founded in honor of Stephen P. Bogdewic, PhD, the first executive vice dean of the IU School of Medicine and founder of its Faculty Affairs and Professional Development office, who retired in 2019 after 30 years with the school. The lectureship — which has evolved into an interview-style conversation — builds on Bogdewic’s legacy of leadership development by promoting and cultivating a leadership mindset.

IU School of Medicine Dean Jay Hess, MD, PhD, MHSA, will interview Skorton about the significant milestones of his career, the factors that have contributed to his success, the influential people who shaped him into the leader he is today and the transformative experiences that mark the different phases of his life.

All IU School of Medicine faculty, staff, trainees and learners are invited to attend the event in person. Lunch will be provided.
